Celebrate early Texas struggles with one of these framed Gonzales battle flags for your Texas office or western home decor, part of our framed Texas flags collection. Designed and painted by Evaline DeWitt and Cynthia Burns, it is now celebrated as one of the first battle flags.
From the first shots fired at the town of Gonzales in September 1835 until the defeat of Santa Anna's men at San Jacinto on April 21, 1836, the Texas forces fought under a number of battle flags. The Gonzales battle flag is generally acknowledged as the first of these flags. Although no original flag exists today, accounts from that era describe the cannon and lone star with the words Come and Take It inscribed.
By the time of the Texas War of Independence, the Mexican government had proved unwilling to provide adequate representation to the young Texas territory. Texas settlers were rebuffed in their attempts to secure a political solution. This banner was finally raised over the town of Gonzales on October 2, 1835.
This Gonzales flag is made from embroidered cotton measuring 24 x 36 inch inches. The flag comes in a your choice of frames: from natural barnwood, custom stained dark barnwood frame, or even a chocolate and gold ornate frame for an even more formal Texas home decor or business office setting. We have also added these in a larger 3 x 5 foot flag in frame, wonderful to proudly display your Texas heritage!
